Except for hydrogen, all the atoms that make each of us up — the iron in our blood, the calcium in our bones, the carbon in our brains — were manufactured in red giant stars thousands of light years away in space and billions of years ago in time. We are, as I like to say, starstuff.

Today I felt so alone. So alone I went up to a homeless man and struck up a conversation. Jack (let’s call him that) has not had a roof above his head for 10 years. But despite this, and despite the fact that he had not eaten in 2 days Jack said he was happy. Jack had not a care in the world. No bills. No mortgage. No job to stress over. No impeding lack of job to stress over. No family whose problems became his. No partner whose shit to deal with. Jack was alone.

And he was happier than I ever have been.
